Ebola Swine Bird Flu Virus
Some interesting stuff I found out about the possibility of such a hybrid virus being created and released as a bioweapon. Remember, Professor Eric Pianka extolled the virtues of Ebola as a swift and efficient killer. Scientists Finally Create an Effective Vaccine Against Bird Flu Virus
So far, the public health authorities have been in a continuous alert due to the presence of H5N1, the bird flu virus which affected Asia and infected about 100 humans in the past 18 months, half of the victims not surviving the virus attack. Scientists worry about a possible global pandemic, and so they have been trying to develop an effective vaccine against H5N1. Until now millions of birds were slaughtered in Asia in the attempt of stopping the virus from transmitting itself to animals and humans. After a long wait, yesterday, a federal health spokesman said that the scientists have finally created an effective vaccine against a strain of the flu virus that is considered to be a possible spark for the beginning of a global pandemic. The vaccine has been tested on 133 volunteers within a study conducted by US universities, and has proved to be efficient, providing a powerful weapon against the flu virus. The study has been conducted at the University of Maryland at Baltimore, the University of Rochester in New York and the University of California at Los Angeles. The conclusions of the study were that two doses of the vaccine [...]
W.Va. success mixed on H1N1 virus, flu summit attendees hear
Pandemic Influenza H1N1 2009 (swine flu) – update The number of consultations for influenza-like illness has been increasing slowly, particularly over the past two weeks. Many general practices are seeing more young children who are unwell. Bird Flu: A Virus of Our Own Hatching
Michael Greger speaks at the Health Sciences Learning Center on his national tour to discuss the theory that modern agricultural practices have played an influential role in the evolution of the H5N1 influenza strain. His theories are controversial because of his outspoken bias against industrialized agriculture and his employment by the nation’s largest animal welfare agency; at the same time they are intriguing and well presented in his book on the topic. Vaccine Against Bird Flu Seems to Loose Its Efficiency on Killing the Virus
Until now doctors have been using the Tamiflu vaccine for treating the cases of human bird flu. The vaccine proved its efficiency but now it seems that the virus is getting resistant to it. This was the conclusion of researchers of Oxford University after two Vietnamese patients died even though they received the Tamiflu vaccine. Until now in South East Asia, 70 people died of the H5N1 virus infection. It seems that the victims got into close contact with infected birds and so they were contaminated. Until now there is no reason to believe there can begin a global pandemic. The only ones who worry a bit are the scientists who know that viruses mutate quickly and can gain the possibility of transmitting themselves from human to human. It seems that those two cases suspected of resistance to Tamiflu died because a low dose of Tamiflu was given to them for unknown reasons. Scientists were not surprised to hear that a possible virus resistance to Tamiflu has set, as they know that bacterium, viruses and any parasite can mutate and become resistant to any treatment. In case resistance to treatment and spreading from one person to [...]
Understanding The Avian Bird Flu Virus And A Look Into Its History
Avian bird flu, a viral disease, also termed as bird flu, avian influenza, type A flu or genus. This flu is a kind of influenza hosted by birds but can affect other animals and particularly humans also. The virus in general is the influenza virus ‘A’ but is a bit different every time the flu breaks out, because of the evolutionary changes it keeps undergoing. New viruses keep getting formed because of genetic mutation and are named using a H number and an N number, which denote different pathogenic profiles. Some of those ones which for sure affect human populace and did so in the past are, H1N1 (Spanish flu, 1918-19) H2N2 (Asian flu, 1957-58), H3N2 (Hong Kong flu, 1968-69), etc. Some of those identified are extinct now because of the constant mutations taking place in the structure of the virus which self destructs its capabilities to infect humans anymore. Also new viruses have come up and currently the major pandemic (epidemic over a wide geographical area) threat is from H5N1 virus. It was first discovered in Italy in 1878 and was even called fowl plague because of the enormity of its effect in chicken livestock. It was however only [...]
