Is it Possible a Global Pandemic Because of Bird Flu?

Since 2003 poultry and other birds have been continuously affected by the bird flu virus. Humans also got affected and it seems that since 16 January 2007, 267 cases of human bird flu infection were registered. These patients got into close contact with infected birds and that is why they got infected too. 161 persons from the group of 267 did not survive the contamination. Until now scientists declared that the virus is still unable to transmit from human to human, but the population is still concerned about the avian flu as there is a possibility for the virus to mix with a human flu virus and then pass from human to human. All viruses have the possibility to mutate or mix with other viruses and transform in to more dangerous ones. In case this thing happens a global pandemic can occur and millions of people will die if researchers do not fid an effective vaccine soon. Until now governments have instituted flu immunization programs to protect those who work with poultry and can contact the virus if the poultry is affected. This vaccination program is voluntary but until now all the personnel from the poultry [...]

A Global Concern Called Bird Flu Outbreak

In the 1330s, the bubonic plague killed millions of people. Transmitted by rats, the disease originated from China. It later spread to Europe when merchants came back from their long voyage from China. The disease was also spread by fleas that when passed on to humans, became fatal. The bubonic plague continued for years and took the lives of millions of people. Seven centuries later, a new disease is threatening to kill many if precautions are not made. This new disease is avian influenza, more commonly known as bird flu. Instead of rodents, birds transmit this disease to humans. Birds carry the bird flu virus in their intestines when they migrate for the winter. The virus, which does not affect the carriers, is deadly to those who come in contact with birds carrying the virus. When chickens, birds or geese come in contact with a bird carrying the virus through the bird’s saliva, nasal secretions or feces, they can become infected, fall ill and die in 48 hours. Humans infected with bird flu have symptoms similar to symptoms of human influenza: fever, sore throat or muscle pain. Because of this similarity, it is easy to mistakenly diagnose an actual bird [...]

The Global Common Flu Impact – An Overview Roberto Sedycias

Which of the nations would ever deny an alluring life full of good health and a germ-free environment? If a disease as common as a common flu could leave an impact in a number of ways, what could be the fate with the fatal ones? Medically known as Influenza, `common flu` is what it is popularly known as worldwide. It is not occasional that we encounter the after-effects of outbreaks of various diseases that have formed the basis of numerous formations like the World Health Organization (WHO), etc. These establish guidelines and process them to get rid of the diseases and their effects altogether. In spite of having known the entire biology of the causal organism of common flu, the influenza virus, the mode of its transmission and the development of vaccines, it has not been possible to eradicate them utterly. The reason behind it is the heterogeneity of the virus that is known to occur in multiple strains and constantly alter their antigenic properties by phenomena called `antigenic shift` and `antigenic drift`. Due to this, although the quarantine could be made strict to check the rapid spread, the medications and vaccinations fail to be absolutely effective and need to [...]
