The Good News And Bad News Of Avian Flu

Well, it’s flu season again. Only this time, we hear everyone talking about avian flu…the Super flu which is expected to wreck havoc across our land in the not so distant months. So what is avian flu? Avian flu is bird flu. Yes, you read that right, “Avian flu is bird flu.” And why might that be such bad news? If you pursue the news much, you will read that the deadliest disease in history is widely regarded as the Spanish Flu epidemic which killed 40 million people in just months. Scientists now believe the epidemic was an avian flu pandemic. In other words, the virus came from birds – it is believed – and a virus similar to this one -called the “H5N1″ (a form of avian flu virus). Its origins?  Most scientists agree it originated in Asia, as this one. Flu comes every season. It comes in one of two forms, Type A or Type B influenza. Type A is the more potent of these kinds of flu, and avian flu is Type A. These strains kill. The current avian flu bug is infecting and spreading throughout the poultry industry in Asia. Why so often in Asia? Simply [...]

Is the bird flu vaccine like a regular flu shot?

The bird flu vaccine is a completely different vaccine than the standard flu shot. This bird flu vaccine will only protect against the bird flu and not any other strains of flu. There is not even a real bird flu vaccine available that we the public are able to get yet. It will be some time before we can get a bird flu vaccine. The only known bird flu vaccine is still in the experimental stages and they do not even know yet how effective it will be, it may not work at all. We hear about the bird flu every day and about how many people it is going to kill throughout the world but to keep things in perspective it is important that you realize that very few people have actually caught the bird flu and even fewer have actually died from it and this is all without the help of a bird flu vaccine. The main cases of those who have gotten this terrible bird flu are cases in which the people themselves were in contact with birds. Bird flu doe snot seem to be spreading from person to person at all so far so there is [...]

Bird Flu,Symptoms Of Bird Flu and Treatments

In other bird flu news The Times this week published an article relating a proposal from flu experts David Fedson, Peter Dunnill and Susan Chu that the use of common cholesterol-lowering medicines against flu be investigated. A highly persistent chemical, dioxin can take more than 15 years to degrade to half its original concentration. If released into the local water supplies—for example, ponds and rivers—it can accumulate in fish. Bird flu virus is highly serious, just like the Swine Flu H1N1 virus is. Commonly known as Avian Flu, it is transmitted by coming into contact with another person who has it, or else by going into an area where there has been an outbreak of this virus. The avian flu is a specific bird condition that affects all kind of birds but wild ones seem to be more resistant and carry the virus without showing any obvious signs. Poultry is most sensitive to the virus and develop the disease; mild cases evolve with respiratory symptoms, low egg production ruffled feathers. The official scientific name for the bird flu virus is H5N1. All flu viruses have an H number and an N number. The H refers to hemagglutinin, which is a [...]

Swine flu produces most of the same symptoms in pigs as human flu produces in people. Swine flu can last about one to two weeks in pigs that survive. Swine influenza virus was first isolated from pigs in 1930 in the U.S. and has been recognized by pork producers and veterinarians to cause infections in pigs worldwide. In a number of instances, people have developed the swine flu infection when they are closely associated with pigs (for example, farmers, pork processors), and likewise, pig populations have occasionally been infected with the human flu infection. In most instances, the cross-species infections (swine virus to man; human flu virus to pigs) have remained in local areas and have not caused national or worldwide infections in either pigs or humans. The Risk of the Bird Flu is Still Present Among Us

Public health authorities are alarmed by a strain of H5N1, also known as the virus of the bird flu, which has firs affected the birds across Asia and Russia. It also has infected more than 100 humans in the past 18 months, killing about half of them. Scientists fear that the virus could begin to spread between humans and so this will unleash a global pandemic. At the annual regional meeting of the World Health Organization in Auckland, New Zealand, among other top items presented, it is expected to be discussed the H5N1 strain of bird flu. The spokesman of WHO declared that even though the cold months in Asia might reduce the damage produced by the disease, the risk factors will remain the same. Richard Nesbit, the acting regional director for the Western Pacific of WHO sustained that the pandemic risk is still present because the virus is highly embedded in the environment. Besides the continuous outbreaks in poultry in Indonesia, now there have appeared new cases in Cambodia and Thailand too. By this moment all the cases when humans were taken ill appeared due to a close contact with infected poultry, but some special [...]

Answers About Bird Flu

We often hear about bird flu from the media. We know that it is a virus that usually affects birds. This virus is a complex one that it does not affect only birds but humans too. Asian countries are the most common areas where bird flu might develop. Also called avian influenza, bird flu is known to develop 15 subtypes of viruses. The most dangerous virus that proved to be a threat for both birds and humans is H5N1. The virus occurs in most of the cases among birds. Wild birds carry the virus in their intestines but usually do not get sick from it. At risk are the domesticated birds such as chickens, ducks or turkeys. After catching the virus these birds are, in most of the cases, going to die. There are known two forms of influenza viruses that are distinguished by low and high extremes of virulence. The low pathogenic form may go undetected and may cause mild symptoms but the highly pathogenic form spreads more rapidly and affects the internal organs of the birds. In more than 90 % of the cases the highly pathogenic form leads to death in less than 48 [...]
